1960s No2s

60sThe Swinging Sixties gave us 128 No2 Hits

The Beatles spent a total of 65 weeks at the top of the chart in the 1960s, and were therefore responsible for a lot of other artists hits stalling at No2.  Three of their own releases were also kept off the top spot, once by themselves!

There are a few surprises in this list. Many very popular hits stalled at No2.  Tom Jones’ ‘Delilah’, Acker Bilk’s ‘Stranger on the Shore’, Little Eva’s ‘Loco-motion’, and The Who’s ‘My Generation’ all appear here.

60s2Petula Clark had a US No1 with ‘Downtown’ but the track peaked at No2 in the UK.

Tony Hatch got the inspiration for the tune in New York in Autumn 1964.  He played it to Ms Clark, with just the word “Downtown”, as he hadn’t completed the lyric.  She said “That's the one I want to record. It just needs some great lyrics.”  He finished writing the song in the Marble Arch Studio toilet, 30 minutes before she recorded it.

In the UK Ms. Clark had two No1 records, ‘Sailor’ and ‘This is My Song’
