The first UK Chart was published in November 1952, and the first single to chart that sold over a million was ‘Rock Around the Clock’ by Bill Haley & His Comets. There’s one million seller that pre-dates the chart; ‘White Christmas’ by Bing Crosby, released in 1942.
The table below shows the list of Million Sellers, in as close to a chart as you can get, until the Official Charts Company release full sales figures.
You will spot songs that are higher placed in my chart than the sales figures indicate. This is because when the Official Charts Company last published them in sales order, they did not include any sales data. Their latest lists are by date of release only.
The last time full sales figures were published was in August 2013. However, in their news articles, The Official Chart Company occasionally gives out sales data on particular tracks, and I’ve used this to update my list.
Songs already close to selling a million include: Hozier’s ‘Take Me to Church’, OMI's ‘Cheerleader’, and
Ellie Goulding’s ‘Love Me Like You Do’.
