UK Million Sellers

UKThe way single record sales are officially recorded changed forever on Tuesday 19th September 2017

The ways the British public buy their music is constantly changing, and
The Official Charts Company have now published an updated list of the UK’s
best selling singles including ‘Streaming Equivalent Sales’ for the first time.
You can find their news story here. 100 streams = 1 sale

Whilst any changes are always controversial, with the vast majority of music consumption now being through streaming, it would be ridiculous for the UK Music Industry’s universally recognized arbiter of all things ‘charty’, not to move with the times.
If you use the argument that a stream shouldn’t count, as it is not really a sale, then you would not be the first to do so.
I’m sure the sellers of sheet music were up in arms when that new fangled vinyl was first counted towards chart sales;-)
There are many arguments to be had about the inclusion of streaming, particularly as to how many streams constitute an actual sale, but as these arguments have already been had by the actual music industry body (which includes small independent retailers btw) I’ll consider it closed as far as my page is concerned.

candle97

The top two UK Best Sellers, however you count them, are both charity singles:  ‘Something About the Way You Look Tonight/Candle in the Wind ‘97’ by Elton John, and ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ by Band Aid.

do they know

The Official Charts Company are understandably protective of their intellectual property rights, and have specifically warned those without a chart license (including amateurs like me) not to reproduce their chart.

So, if you want to see the full list of newly classified million sellers go to their site The Official UK Million Sellers.
However, as music, and lists, are a bit of a passion of mine, I’m hoping they will not take offense at my list of physical and download million sellers below.  It is of course taken from their data, so if you’re reading this Official Charts Company, just let me know if you have a problem!

wham-everything-she-wants-remix-1984-7

The physical best seller that didn’t make No.1 is Wham’s ‘Last Christmas/Everything She Wants’ which was kept off the top spot by the original Band Aid release.  George Michael donated the first year of his royalties to the Band Aid Appeal.
The combined sales best seller that didn’t make No.1 is ‘All of Me’ by John Legend.

ST-388

Adding streaming to sales has increased the full list of Million Sellers to 311 (as of 19/9/17), but there are 170 that have sold a million physical copies.  This is 3 more than the last time The Official Charts Company (TOCC) published a list.  That was nearly a year ago, so it looks like quite a lot of time was spent with discussions behind the scenes at TOCC about how to incorporate streaming into official sales data.b987a0d3e07d6f10d3c434bfb69a651f.1000x1000x1

The biggest change is the entry of many recent hits, that have not sold a million physical or download copies, but have been streamed many millions of times.  The biggest sellers though, usually also have respectable ‘real’ sales.  This is likely to be true for only so long, as physical sales dwindle even further.  They currently account for only 10% of the singles market.
For a single to be counted as a Million Seller on streams alone, it would need to be streamed 100 million times in the UK.

The biggest news is that Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ has slipped from #3 to #4 on the new list.
Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape of You’ now holds the accolade as the biggest selling non-charity single.  It has sold over 3/4 of a million copies and been streamed over 212 million times.
